Who we are

Vet Rate (www.vetrate.co.uk) is an independent website and is responsible for any personal information described here. You can contact us at [contact email – set “contact_email” in data/meta.json].

What happens to what you enter

What you enterWhat happens to it
Your postcodeUsed in your browser to work out distances to practices. It isn’t saved, and it isn’t sent to us. To show Google ratings for the practices near you, your browser sends the location of the postcode’s centre (not your own location) to Google once per search. If you choose Map, Google Maps also loads the map of the area around it.
Your pet, the price you’re comparing, and what you include in the yearly costSaved in your browser on this device, so the search remembers your choices next time.
Practices you tick to compare, and the “other treatment” amount in the health plan boxKept only while the page is open. Not saved, and not sent to us.
Whether you’ve closed the “add to home screen” tipSaved in your browser on this device, so we don’t show it again.
Appointment checklist ticksSaved in your browser on this device only.

Other companies involved when you visit

Like every website, ours relies on a few services that receive technical information from your browser, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested.

  • Netlify hosts the website and keeps routine server logs to run it securely. Netlify’s privacy policy.
  • Google Maps Platform supplies the ratings, addresses, phone numbers and opening hours on the Find a vet page, and the map. When you search, your browser asks Google once for the ratings of vet practices near the postcode’s centre. When you open or compare practices, or use Emergency now, it asks Google for those practices’ details. So Google receives your IP address, browser details, the postcode’s location and which practices were looked up. If you choose Map, Google also receives the area the map shows. Google may use its own cookies or similar technologies. Google’s privacy policy.
  • Google Fonts supplies the typefaces, so Google receives your IP address and browser details when the page loads.

Links to vet practices, online pharmacies and other websites take you to sites with their own privacy policies.

Behind the scenes: how we gather prices

None of this involves information about you as a visitor.

  • We read vet practices’ and online pharmacies’ public websites to find their published prices, opening arrangements and which pets they treat. We store the practice’s business details (name, postcode, website, owner and prices) and Google’s reference number for the practice; we don’t store information about individual vets or staff.
  • This runs on Google Cloud (in the EU), which also stores our price data. Google Cloud’s privacy notice.
  • We use Claude, an AI system from Anthropic, to read prices from those web pages. Only the practice’s public web page is sent to it. Anthropic’s privacy policy.
  • We keep a dated record of the prices we find, so we can show how prices and price publishing change over time.

Cookies and visitor statistics

We don’t set cookies, and we don’t use advertising or social media tracking. The only things saved on your device are the conveniences listed above, kept in your browser’s local storage.

We don’t currently use analytics. If we add cookie-free visitor statistics, we’ll update this page first.

If you contact us or register a practice

If you email us, for example to correct a price, we use your email address and message only to reply and to make the correction.

If you use our register a practice form, what you enter (the practice’s details, your name, email and role, and any notes) is sent to us through Netlify’s form service, stored in our Netlify account and emailed to us. We use it only to check the listing, add or correct it, and contact you about it. We delete your name and email within 12 months of dealing with the listing; the practice’s public details stay on the site.

Why we can use this information

Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR), we rely on our legitimate interests in running a secure, working website and in replying to people who contact us, in keeping listings accurate, and in anonymous visitor counts. Some of the services above may process information outside the UK under their own safeguards.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Contact us at [contact email – set “contact_email” in data/meta.json]. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Vet Rate is meant for adult pet owners and isn’t aimed at children.
